Residence Hall Recycling Programs
|
|
|
| During the 2001 - 2002 academic year, the Residence Life Department began installing sprinkler systems into the residence halls on campus. Since these systems prevent the accumulation of paper from becoming a fire hazard to residents, the Recycling Center was allowed to begin in-house residence hall recycling programs for the first time. |
| Step 1: Legett Hall Pilot Recycling Program |
![]() |
| In Spring of 2002, the TAMU Recycling Program kicked off its first pilot residence hall recycling program in Legett Hall, an all-female hall on the north side of campus. At a series of floor meetings, the program was introduced to residents and small individual containers were distributed to each room within the hall. The residents of Legett collected all types of paper, cardboard, and ink cartridges for recycling. A central collection station was set up in the hall’s basement lounge where residents could empty their room containers. |
|
Legett’s environmental chair was responsible for calling the Recycling Center to schedule a pick-up of the central collection containers when needed. The program was a great success. Just during just the Spring 2002 semester, the 170 residents of Legett Hall collected 2,656 pounds of paper and cardboard and 27 ink cartridges for recycling! |
| Step 2: Hobby Hall Pilot Recycling Program |
| Due to the success of the program, the Recycling Program was proud to continue the in-house recycling program in Legett Hall during the 2002 – 2003 academic year. We also decided to initiate another pilot program in a hall with a much different style than Legett to determine if it would be just as successful. When Hobby Hall, a co-ed modular-style hall also on the north side, had its sprinkler system installed, it became our choice. Again our program was a success; Hobby collected 2,592 pounds of paper and 4 ink cartridges in 8 months. |
| Step 3: Expansion to Mosher and Schuhmacher Halls |
| Based on our past residence hall recycling programs, in the 2003 - 2004 academic year, we chose to continue our expansion of the program to include Mosher and Schuhmacher Halls. These programs will operate in the same way as the Legett and Hobby Hall programs. We hope to one day offer in-house recycling to all residence halls on campus! |
